Mardi Mercredi’s second Japanese flagship store found its place in Chayamachi, Osaka.

Because the site had an uneven floor with distinct level differences, a reactionary solution was needed to compensate for these issues and to allow the found identity of the site to express itself. To address this, the concept of “shitsu (室),” a traditional Japanese architectural method of defining space, was adopted as an elevated platform design that lies on top of the entire floor.

This composition of varying floor levels not only serves to even out the height differences of the given site, but also allows visitors to more distinctly experience transitions between spaces as they move from the entrance to the fitting room and finally to the counter.

Japanese wooden joinery techniques were used in constructing the platform and the flooring are modern reinterpretations of traditional tatami pattern, which are finished with ash wood panels of unconventional sizes. The ash wood, carefully selected from a lumber mill in Shizuoka, adds a sense of stability and weight to the space with its distinctive grain and solid texture.

Additionally, FRP, which originally has a bright yellow hue, was custom-colored into a light green. This adjustment softens the inherent material properties while harmonizing naturally with the overall tone of the space.

These subtle changes in color do more than alter the visual characteristics of materials—they break down spatial boundaries and create a deeper, more sensorial connection.

Meticulously planned structural elements, combined with details that might otherwise go unnoticed, often culminate in unexpectedly refined aesthetic impressions.

マルディメクルディの日本における2号店は、大阪・茶屋町に位置する。

現場では床の不陸や段差が顕著であったため、それを是正しつつ空間のアイデンティティを明確に表現することが求められた。そこで、日本の伝統建築に見られる「室」の概念を取り入れ、空間全体の床を段状に持ち上げる手法が採用された。この段差構成は、単なる仕上げ材の高さ調整にとどまらず、来訪者が入口からフィッティングルーム、さらにレジカウンターへと進むにつれて、空間の変化を明確に体感できるよう意図されている。

段差の構成には日本の木造技術を応用し、床仕上げには畳のパターンを現代的に再解釈した、一般的ではないサイズのアッシュ無垢材パネルを採用。静岡の木材工場で直接選定されたアッシュ材は、際立つ木目と堅牢な質感を備え、空間に安定感と重厚さをもたらしている。

また、元々黄味がかっていたFRP素材には、落ち着いた淡い緑色の調色を施し、素材本来の質感を柔らかく際立たせながら、空間全体のトーンにも自然に馴染ませている。

こうした繊細な色彩の変化は、単なる視覚的演出にとどまらず、空間の境界を曖昧にし、より深い感覚的なつながりを生み出している。綿密に計画された構造要素と、見過ごされがちな微細なディテールが融合することで、ときに意図を超えた領域においても、洗練された美的印象を生み出している。
